Paul Ignaz Liechtenauer (ca. 1673-1756) was organist and Kapellmeister at Osnabrück Cathedral for over forty years. Of his compositions, the 24 offertories op. 1 (1736) and a collection of six masses op. 2 (1741) as well as an oboe concerto have survived. The 24 offertories require four solos, four-part choir, strings and basso continuo. The works published by the renowned Augsburg publisher Lotter were used in church music practice in the Catholic region, primarily in southern Germany and Austria.
The single offertories are suitable for concert practice, but also for use in church liturgies due to their limited playing time and practical performance requirements. Liechtenauer's music has an almost italianate, festive splendor of sound, combined with great expressive richness. It involves the listener and immerses them in the spirit and imagery of the late Baroque period.
