Music Culture 2.0
Exemplary Analyses on Web-Based Relations between Semi-Professional Bands and Their Virtual Audience
The internet has undoubtedly brought about a revolution in music culture: thousands of semi-professional
bands now present themselves via the social media to communicate and interact with their fans, and spread
their songs through specialized music platforms on a global scale. The new forms of medial distribution
and reception of music – what is called "music culture 2.0" here – offer new possibilities for bands to
merchandise their music, but also pose unknown challenges.
Although the interaction of technological, economic and sociocultural changes brings about far-reaching
consequences to web-based music culture, academic research on this subject is rare. The results of a
comprehensive online survey questioning more than 500 bands shall shed some light on how semi-professional
bands perceive and assess their new situation, and how much effort semi-professional bands actually put
into their struggle for success.
